Pre-match jaunt – Waituna Lagoon/Awarua Wetland

This is an internationally recognised wetland site frequented by diverse migrating and wading bird species. Relatively unspoiled compared to similar waterways in other parts of the country, Awarua peat complex and areas of cushion bog are usually only found in subalpine regions.

Dropkick the hangover – Croydon Bush

Located approximately 10km to the north west of Gore, this place provides a glimpse of the past. Surrounded by farmland, Croydon Bush shows what much of Southland once looked like with forest, grassland and shrubland communities. The loop track begins at Dolamore Park and takes 30 minutes return to walk.
