We explain the name for the last round of action in the Six Nations
The phrase Six Nations Super Saturday refers to the last round of the Six Nations championship when all of the teams play on the the same day – the last Saturday of the tournament.
As you’ll see from the Six Nations fixtures, the last round will feature Wales versus Italy first, then Ireland v Scotland in Dublin, and finally France versus England.
When does the Six Nations finish in 2024?
The last round of the 2024 Six Nations will be held on Saturday 16 March. The first match (Wales versus Italy) will begin at 2.15pm, the second (Ireland v Scotland) is at 4.45pm, and the last match of Super Saturday (France v England) starts at 8pm.
Has the Six Nations title ever been decided on Super Saturday?
In 2003, both Ireland and England were in the hunt for a Grand Slam as it came down to a decider in Dublin. In the end England would take the title – however, back in 2003, not all matches were played on the same day, with England winning on the Sunday.
A year later, and it all changed, with all of the final matches being played on the same day.
France just edged England 24-21 in their last fixture in 2004, to take a Grand Slam and the championship title.
In 2005, Wales won a Grand Slam and their first tile in 11 years. With France breathing down their neck, the Welsh won 32-20 against Ireland to win it all.
In 2006 France won on points difference after a final-round win over Wales, and they did so again in 2007 – though that time edging out Ireland – following a last-round thumping of Scotland by the French.
In 2011, England were denied a Grand Slam by the Irish in the final round. In 2013, Wales’ famous 30-3 win over England in the last round meant that the Welsh won the title (ahead of England) on points difference.
The next year, a two-point win for Ireland over France on Super Saturday sealed the deal.
In 2015, we had a crazy finish – there were 27 tries on the final day as England, Ireland and Wales could have all won the title. In the end, England had to beat France by 26 points to take the title. However, it finished 55-35, and so Ireland lifted the trophy after their win in Scotland.
