Woodhouse Grove held off Skinners, Llandovery College, St Joseph’s, Abingdon, Denstone and RGS Newcastle to win this month’s award.
The Yorkshire school advanced to the last 16 of the Daily Mail U18 Cup for the first time with excellent victories at two of the big local grammar schools, Leeds (36-6) and Bradford (46-0).
Having beaten Barnard Castle in both cup and friendly, Yarm and Durham, the only blemish in 12 games was a 12-10 defeat at Lymm HS when a missed penalty with the final kick could have seen the XV remain unbeaten. Other impressive wins came earlier against QEGS Wakefield (14-7) and Wilmslow HS (23-8).
Captain/prop Jake Armstrong proved an inspirational leader and kept the players grounded, making them realise that only by continued hard work and buying into the team ethos will success be achieved. A real determination to win was epitomised by the all-embracing defence in the tough Barnard Castle games.
No 8 Tom Cummins has been another huge influence up front whilst centre Dom Copsey’s role as playmaker and goalkicker has been a key factor. His last-gasp drop-goal in the first game with Barnard Castle will be talked about for many a year whilst winning the cup game without Armstrong playing the second half speaks volumes for the team.
