Which was your first team?
Winchester U7. I stayed with Winchester through the age groups.

Did you play other sports?
I’m a black belt in karate, I swam and did athletics, but I started cutting out everything else for rugby when I was about 16.

Have you always been a centre?
Growing up, I played everywhere. From the age of 16 I was ten or 15 but covered 12. In my first A League game for Quins they put me on at 13 and I had never played there properly. I played all right and it just stuck. I like 13 because you get more space.

When did you first link up with Quins?
When I just turned 17. I was with London Irish before that.

What do you do outside of rugby?
I am doing a BTec in Sport at Peter Symonds College, Winchester.

Who has had a big influence on you?
My dad, all the Quins coaches and my mentor, Jordan Turner-Hall. He has really helped me and I can talk things through with him.

When did you first play for England?
I didn’t get into the U16s but I played for the U18s.

Was it tough losing to Wales on your England U20 debut?
Yes. The boys didn’t give up and we have learnt from it. Scoring a try on my debut was a positive.

What are your aims now?
To try to get game time with Quins and make my first-team debut, and to be a regular starter for England U20 and a key player in the Junior World Cup.

RW verdict: Marchant’s autumn was disrupted by an ankle injury but he has come back strongly, scoring five tries in England’s first three U20 Six Nations games. An outstanding all-round athlete, he has a bright future.
