Accurately throwing into a lineout is a crucial skill. Hit your jumpers and you can launch attacks through quick ball off the top or setting up a driving maul. It can be crucial to find your target in defence too – winning possession allows you to relieve pressure in your own half.

This video shows you the right stance and grip to perfect the throw. You want to have your feet, hips and shoulders all facing the direction of the throw, with knees slightly bent. In terms of holding the ball, your power hand should be near the back of the ball with your guiding hand further forward. And make sure you follow through as you throw so your hands end up pointing at the target.

As with all skills, practice makes perfect and it’s important to nail down the technique before adding other elements, like putting spin on the ball.
