In the October issue of Rugby World we had a Rugby Rant about how annoying the half-time interview is – from the middle of the final of the Women’s World Cup to Aviva Premiership clashes.
However, there is an exception to every rule. For every dull, insight-less, pointless half-time interview there will be one nugget of brilliance thrown at an unsuspecting interviewer. So step forward mischievous prop Paddy Ryan.
During the Sydney Stars match against the North Harbour Rays in the new NRC tournament – Australia’s answer to the ITM Cup – three-cap Aussie prop Ryan uttered this beauty of a line about “taking home the bacon.”
Remember, this is the same competition (the same game, even) that allowed this monstrosity to happen: rugby’s first ‘own try’. There are plenty of Super Rugby stars on show, too. They look like they are having fun… even if there is the odd blip here or there.
So there you go. Half-time interviews are pointless (in our opinion). But at least this one is not banal. It’s fun. And it is treating the new institution of half-time interviews with the gravity the practice deserves. Good on you Paddy. Enjoy your bacon.
