A rugby-themed Bollywood movie has had the RW team in stitches. It seems there is nothing Bollywood can’t improve with a compelling storyline and the triumph of good over evil
The story of Sye follows a journey of two rival rugby teams as they join forces to keep a mafia-type overlord from procuring their university rugby pitch for his own nefarious aims. They throw down the gauntlet and challenge him to a game to win back their hallowed turf.
We’ve since found out the film was made by prolific Bollywood director S.S. Rajamouli, way back in 2004, but it has had an unexpected resurgence after being posted on Reddit this week. Good spot, rugby fans!
The full-length film, for your delectation, can be found here, but unfortunately it does not contain sub-titles, so for those not fluent in Hindi, it’s visuals all the way. Anyway, the final game between the Bulls and the Eagles needs no words. It contains over-the-top comedy violence and a big departure from many of the actual rules of rugby, but hey, why let that get in the way of a good narrative?
If you haven’t got time to watch it all, make sure you catch the ‘haka’ moments before the final showdown – it has to be seen to be believed. Would the All Blacks approve? Well, after their Men in Black efforts, the answers probably a resounding yes…
