Something of a foregone conclusion from the moment Pierra Hola’s opening kick off sailed straight into touch, and the score ended almost exactly the same as the result (46-11) when the two sides played in Viadana!
The Tigers laboured for most of the match, and failed to score for the first 30 minutes of the second half but the performance provides few problems for Leicester coach Richard Cockerill because it was one of those games you can forget, not analyse and put in the history books.
Every part of the Tigers’ work in the coming week will focus on the Ospreys and the two games will bear little resemblance.
Clermont did Leicester a favour in a way, beating the Ospreys, because it gives the Welsh region only a slim chance of progressing – and that might be the edge Leicester need.
Against Viadana:
Tom Croft – Bad news for the Lions and England blindside as he tore medial ligaments in the game and will be out for 5-6 weeks missing the start of the Six Nations. Last season Croft’s lineout work was crucial to Martin Johnson, because of the way it allowed him to put Simon Shaw in other parts of the field. England will probably go with Haskell-Moody-Easter in the back row, against Wales with Croft out. He should be back for the final rounds of the Six Nations.
Louis Deacon – Gets better and better with each performance. Limited opposition today, but still his stature around the field was compelling. Future England Captain!
Toby Flood – Martin Johnson will be delighted to see this DVD. Flood is coming back into good form bang on time and will challenge Jonny Wilkinson for the England N0 10 shirt. Another faultless day with the boot will help. My clear man of the match.
Ben Woods – A marauding No 7 who could will surely play for England one day.
But were you at the game? Or do you have a view on next Saturday’s big clash between Leicester and the Ospreys.
