THE SARACENS players may be used to stepping in the path of oncoming juggernauts and tackling concrete pillars but last week they faced a whole new test of their nerves – 30 metres above the pitch at Wembley Stadium.
Ahead of Saracens fixture at Wembley Stadium against Leicester Tigers on Saturday September 15th, Matt Stevens, Andy Saull and Nils Mordt zipped across the iconic Wembley pitch, giving them a slightly different insight into what awaits them in just over two weeks time.
Also on show were Bahamian four-piece, Cover Drive, who did an impromptu acoustic set in the Wembley stands before taking to Level 5 of the Stadium and zipping down the wire. Cover Drive (named after the stroke in cricket) performed their new single ‘Explode’ from their debut album Bajan Style and will be providing entertainment during the Saracens v Tigers fixture.
Saracens player Matt Stevens said, “I’ve played at Wembley before but to see it from so high up and hanging on a zip wire – I don’t think I’ve ever felt quite so nervous! The Zip Wire was a brilliant adrenalin rush and has got us well and truly pumped up before the big game”.
The Zip Wire has proved a hugely successful addition to the traditional Wembley Tour – where visitors can get an insight into the history of the English game at ‘The Home of Football’ and walk in the footsteps of some of the world’s best players.
Roger Maslin, Managing Director of Wembley Stadium, said: “Wembley Stadium is proud to have hosted some of the best sporting and musical events over the years. During that time we have amassed a number of records and last season saw Saracens break the attendance record for a Rugby Union fixture. Saracens are at the peak of English and European rugby currently and we look forward with great expectation to their match with Leicester Tigers on September 15th. With Cover Drive also providing entertainment on the day for fans, it is sure to be a great day out for everyone.”
Saracens and Leicester Tigers battled at the top of the Aviva Premiership throughout last season. Tickets are still available for the game, with adults available from £16 and Under 16s from £6.
