There are not many of them during this Rugby World Cup, but when there are days without rugby it leaves us a little lost for ways to entertain ourselves
Looking at the fixture list ahead of the Rugby World Cup a few days stood out – the ones where there was no rugby on.
When the first round of matches was over a certain fear set in – what will I do with myself now there’s not rugby on television every minute of the day?
Other than going to work – which, admittedly, is at a rugby website – I had to quickly readjust to not settling down and watching hours and hours of World Cup action, and only days after it graced our screens for the first time.
Rugby is back on Wednesday, but here at Rugby World we like to help you guys out when it comes to dealing with withdrawal symptoms, so here are five things you can do to get through the empty days.
Catch up on the highlights
What better way to deal with the lack of rugby than to watch some rugby videos? The opening weekend spoiled us with some amazing action, from England and Fiji kicking it all off to Japan upsetting South African and Georgia beating Tonga.
The video above is a compilation of the best tries, including an end-to-end effort from the USA’s Chris Wyles and of course the game-winning effort from Japan’s Karne Hesketh.
The good people at World Rugby have uploaded all the highlights from the games so far, so if you missed any of the action then it couldn’t be easier to catch up.
Learn how to pronounce players’ names
If you’re going to partake in watercooler chats about the Rugby World Cup in the next six weeks it’s pretty important that you can pronounce a few of the key names in the tournament.
Georgia captain Mamuka Gorgodze (Mah-moo-kah Gor-got-zay) was one of the standout performers of the weekend, but even the editor of Rugby World has trouble saying his name.
Commentator and former Wales great Jonathan Davies always had trouble with former France international Imanol Harinordoquay‘s name, but thankfully for us he’s not in this year’s tournament.
Other tricky names to be careful of are Noa Nakaitaci (No-ah Nah-kah-tah-si) and Mike Brown (Mike Brown). It’s a dangerous world out there, don’t get caught out.
Download the Rugby World podcast
Fresh out the edit suite on Monday, the Rugby World podcast recaps on the weekend’s games and looks ahead to the next round of matches. The team discuss the weekend’s shocks and the flurry of injuries that beset the likes of Wales in their first game.
Speculate wildly about who will be picked for the next matches
Will Sam Burgess start for England? Will Richie McCaw be rested by the All Blacks for their game against Namibia? Will Warren Gatland have 15 fit players to choose from?
All questions that we’re speculating about at the moment, so why not get in on the action and make some educated guesses about who your team will send on to the field in their next matches.
